On Thursday, 17 March 2022 members of the Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a police constable stationed at Belhar police station on corruption charges. It is alleged that the suspect approached a male who he previously arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and asked he be paid an amount of money in return for the police official not to testify against him.
The male paid the suspect an amount in cash of which he was told to come back for the rest at a later stage. An undercover operation was set up after the complainant agreed to pay the money on 17 March 2022.
The 27-year-old suspect is due to make a court appearance in Bellville Magistrates court today.
Furthermore members of the Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a police sergeant and two constables between the ages of 23 and 35 stationed at Lwandle police station on charges of corruption and defeating the administration of justice on the afternoon of 17 March 2022.
It is alleged the police members searched a premises where dagga was found and asked the suspect to pay an amount of money in order not be arrested. The members took three bankies dagga and left the rest with the suspect.
They are due to appear in the Strand Magistrates court on Friday on the mentioned charges.
SAPS management in the Western Cape will not hesitate in taking action against police officers who find themselves on the wrong side of the law, as there is no space in SAPS for criminals.
