WESTERN CAPE — The second and final day of the 2026 Local Government Elections special voting is underway this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, serving as a vital inclusivity mechanism for registered citizens who cannot visit standard polling stations on the main election day.
Special voting is specifically designed to accommodate individuals facing physical infirmities or disabilities, as well as those who are unable to be present in their registered wards during the primary election. The process officially commenced at 8:00 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude at 5:00 p.m., with voting taking place at designated stations and through residential home visits nationwide.
The initiative experienced a highly successful launch on Monday, with the Electoral Commission reporting that approximately 99% of voting stations opened precisely on schedule. Despite the overall success, isolated logistical challenges were noted in certain regions. Michael Hendrickse, the Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer, confirmed that some areas in the province experienced unforeseen delays in receiving special vote ballots. Hendrickse attributed these disruptions to complications involving the Commission and the contracted printing company responsible for ballot production.
During a media briefing held on Monday evening, the Commission expressed overall satisfaction with the initial proceedings. Representatives stated that the successful execution of the first day establishes a solid foundation for enhanced operational performance during the final day of special voting and the main election day.
The Commission extended its gratitude to voters, political candidates, and parties for their ongoing cooperation. Special acknowledgment was given to the thousands of election officials managing station operations and conducting home visits across the country. Citizens approved for special voting who have not yet cast their ballots are urged to do so before the 5:00 p.m. deadline.
Addressing concerns regarding missed appointments, the Commission clarified during a Sunday media briefing that voters who miss their scheduled home visits on November 2 and 3 will not be disenfranchised. These individuals retain the right to exercise their vote by visiting their designated voting station on Election Day, which falls on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
