Universities must discipline unruly students – education dept
UKZN protest damage.

The Department of Higher Education on Tuesday called on University of KwaZulu-Natal management to discipline students who had destroyed property and “threatened lives”.

This followed nearly two days of violent protests at the university’s Westville campus.

The department condemned the “criminal element” responsible for the destruction of property.

“We call upon the management and the council of UKZN to act decisively and take strong action against anyone found to have contributed to the violence and destruction of property,” it said in a statement.

Students had the right to protest, but should respect the rights and property of others.

Teaching, learning and research were sacrosanct. Institutions needed to find amicable solutions to their problems and take disciplinary action when it was warranted, the department said.
