Two filling station robbers arrested

Two men have been nabbed in connection with a spate of filling station robberies in Diepsloot and Olivenhoutbosch, police said.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela in a statement said detailed investigations by police linked a 28-year-old man arrested in Extension Seven on Thursday in possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition to two garage robberies committed in September and October.

Further investigations resulted in the arrest of an alleged accomplice, a 23-year-old man, who was also arrested in Extension Seven.

“Suspected stolen cash and cellphones were seized when the 23-year-old was caught,” Mavimbela said.

“The two men were linked jointly and separately in three filling station robberies. At this stage it is believed that each suspect was involved in at least two of the robberies.”

During the heists at three filling stations – two in Diepsloot and one in Olievenhoutbosch – a group of men reportedly fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Goods were also stolen from retailers and customers.

“Following the breakthrough in the robberies, the police are hot on the trail of about six remaining suspects. More arrests are expected,” Mavimbela confirmed.

The two suspects currently behind bars will accordingly be charged with business robbery and charges of possession of suspected stolen property, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, he added.
