Tons of gold mined illegally was smuggled out of South Africa during the State Capture period. In the period 2012 to 2015, more than 34 metric tons of gold went to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which did not reflect in the SA trade account.
The information was announced by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime researchers.
According to the report, the illegal gold mines cost the country about R14 billion a year and that illegal trade goes via Swaziland and Mozambique to to jewelry manufacturers in Dubai.
Observers believe this is one of the greater reasons why South Africa’s economy is struggling, and suspicions are that diamonds and other precious stones are following the same route.
