Three pedestrians shot during police chase

Three bystanders were shot and wounded during a police chase in Rosettenville, Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.

Police said a man who was driving a BMW fired shots at police who were following him, hitting three bystanders.

Paramedics said one of those injured was a child but this could not be confirmed by police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

He said police followed a car driving away from a spaza shop on the corners of Lily and Lawn streets when he started shooting at them.

“The suspect started shooting at the police. During the process the suspect shot three bystanders. The members fired several shots at the suspect who managed to escape,” said Dlamini.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said on their arrival at the scene the paramedics found two men, believed to be about 25 and 34 years of age, lying on the pavement.

Bodasing said while on the scene, paramedics were informed that a child was also shot at. The patient however was apparently transported to hospital prior to the paramedics arrival.
