Three men arrested for elderly couple’s murder

Three men have been arrested for allegedly killing and robbing an elderly couple in Nigel, a small mining town east of Gauteng on Sunday morning, police said.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Kay Makhubela, said the three had entered the couple’s home early on Sunday morning.

“They stabbed the 69-year-old man several times and he died on the scene. They then went after his 67-year-old wife. She was strangled and also died,” he said.

The men then stole items in the couple’s home before fleeing.

The couple, which was last seen at 22:00 on Saturday night, were discovered by family members on Sunday morning around 11:00 when they went to visit the couple, Makhubela said.

Police were alerted and investigations led officers to another house in the area where the trio was found in possession of the said stolen items.

They were arrested and are expected to appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder and house robbery.
