Three in court after cop shot, colleague kidnapped

Johannesburg – Three people who allegedly shot and wounded a police officer and kidnapped his colleague in a police van are expected to appear in a North West court on Monday.

The two officers, a lieutenant and a reserve constable, were shot at when they responded to a robbery at a foreign-owned tuck shop in Setlagole village, about 95km south-west of Mahikeng, last Sunday, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

The lieutenant was shot in the stomach and thrown out of the police van. Four assailants took his female colleague’s gun, bundled her into the back of the van and drove off. She escaped by kicking the door open.

In their hurry to get away, the driver lost control of the van and knocked down and injured a pedestrian. They abandoned the van and fled on foot.

The four were arrested in Mahikeng and Taung on Wednesday and Thursday. One of them, Lucky Dlamini, 40 appeared in Atamelang Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The other three would appear in court on Monday.
