“They are burning anything they get their hands on” – KZN protest

Protesters set fire to several factories, cars, and municipal infrastructure in Isithebe, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.

“They have set fire to several factories in the area and they are just burning anything they can get their hands on,” IPSS Security spokesperson Dylan Meyrick said.

“Every time the police engage a group of them, another group mass behind the officers again. They have just set fire to a furniture factory,” he said.

The police’s public order unit and private security officials had engaged in running battles with rioters.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said residents began protesting around 22:00 on Sunday.
“They are apparently complaining about the renomination of the ex-mayor for the upcoming elections,” he said.
About 50 people had been arrested for public violence.
This is a developing story.
