Cape Town – A man who broke in to a house in Matshana and raped an 8-year-old girl has been sentenced to a decade behind bars.
Lindo Shandu, 23, was handed a 10 year sentence in the Empangeni Regional Court for the incident which took place on 26 July 2014, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said in a statement.
“Shandu, who is also from the [Matshana] area, broke into a house where siblings were sleeping and raped [the] girl. The victim was able to recognise him and reported the incident to her grandmother,” he said.
A rape case was laid at the Empangeni police station and Shandu was arrested on the same day.
After an investigation by the Empangeni Family Violence and Child Protection Unit, the evidence presented to the court resulted in the suspect’s conviction.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the authorities would continue to fight those who prey on children.
