Ten classrooms, clinic torched in North West violent riot

Ten classrooms were damaged when three schools were burnt during a protest in Atamalang near Delareyville in North West on Wednesday.

SAPS Captain Paul Ramaloko said a clinic was also torched. Residents were demanding electricity.

“Five classrooms were burnt at one school. At another school, four classrooms were burnt and one classroom was destroyed at the third school,” he said.

Four people were arrested for malicious damage to property and were expected to appear in court on Thursday.

The North West education department said schooling had been affected.

“Learners did not come to school as results of the protest. The situation here is bad, there are no people on the streets. The roof of one school was blown away as if it was hit by a heavy explosion,” spokesperson Elias Malindi said.

He said he was moving from one school to another to assess the damaged.
