43% of the state’s total expenditure is currently spent on civil servants salaries, and in June there will be an increase. It should be one percentage higher than the consumer price index. This means that the wage bill will rise even higher.

Economist Mike Schussler said that ordinary citizens have to be taxed to pay civil servants’ salaries, instead of money being used to improve infrastructure and service delivery.

Schüssler said the government’s payroll as a percentage of gross domestic product has climbed to almost 14% and is the highest in the world. While our tax rate is the fourth highest in the world.

There is no confidence in the new Minister of Public Service and Administration, Faith MUTHAMBI. She was responsible for the financial crisis of the SABC, and economists believe she will not be able to control the civil service wage bill. Even Pravin Gordhan could not do it.
