The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has until the end of July to respond to a report from the Ombudsman regarding the reimbursement of funds (taxes and VAT) to individuals and businesses.
Pravin Gordhan revealed to parliament that SARS owed more than R19,6 billion in VAT refunds at February 2017.
Tom Moyane of SARS claims that they are serious about providing excellent service and are also serious that all overdue refunds that will be repaid.
However, Moyane’s comment does not satisfy taxpayers. SARS retained the money for a long time, and interest earned on it benefits SARS only. Taxpayers demand that they receive interest on the arrears, just as SARS is quick to charge fines and interest if taxpayers owe something to them.
