A TAU SA delegation led by the union’s president, Mr. Louis Meintjes, talked with police minister Fikile Mbalula, about the current state of rural security. Farmers’ frustrations are growing on the level of crime, they are becoming impatient, and there is a danger that they can take the law into their own hands if the police do not do their job.

Mr. Meintjes mentioned the conversation as “candid and constructive.” He said that some critical aspects and suggestions were shared and discussed with the minister and representatives of the SAPS, and he had the impression that TAU SA’s input was well received.
It appeared that the minister understood the importance of a safe environment within which farmers should produce and undertook to deal with the issue with President Jacob Zuma, and in particular discuss not only crime in general but the importance of rural security.
He responded favorably and, with the conversation as a starting point, undertakes to follow the issue early in the new year by holding further talks with ASUF representing organized agriculture.

Meanwhile, he undertook that SAPS ‘Operation Festive Season will be utilized to provide additional resources to look after the safety of farm and rural residents.
