Swodana Bay holiday turns into crime nightmare

Sodwana Bay – A Cape family’s holiday turned in to a nightmare on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 17:00 when they were victims of an armed robbery near Sodwana Bay in Natal. Brian Flanagan was shot in his back after he was stopped by a suspect who had begged for money.

Brian, his wife, June and their son Andrew spent the day at Mabibi Beach. They went back to their residence just before 17:00. The tragedy occurred when they crossed a rural track between Lake Sibaya and Sodwana. The road was blocked by branches, the family stopped to remove the branches.

That’s when the suspect approached them and begged for money. However, they refused and Brian turned his back on the suspect. The suspect pulled out a gun and shot him in the back.

Andrew got in the driver’s side because he would have driven home. With the shock and confusion he immediately pulled his father in the vehicle. Utter panic set in and Andrew tried to get away with the car but drove off the road and the car got stuck. The suspect approached them again with the gun and demanded money. He fled with R4000 cash.

Brian was rushed to the Mseleni hospital he was transferred to Empangeni Garden Clinic.
Twelve hours after he was shot, he already underwent his first operation. He had another surgery on Monday. He is stable but critical.

Mbazwana police have opened a case of armed robbery. According to the description by the victims, this suspect is responsible for other crimes in the area.

No one has been arrested.
