The suspended acting head of the SABC, James Aguna, resigned with immediate effect, apparently in an attempt to prevent disciplinary action against him.
Although the SABC has indicated that they consider reversing disciplinary complaints against him, it does not mean that he is automatically excused from criminal prosecution as there are apparently investigations against him. There were ten disciplinary charges against him, which even included perjury.
However, the chairman of the SABC said that his resignation did not mean that all complaints would be withdrawn against him but will hold talks with him to discuss the matters.
He was charged with breach of tender procedures and wasteful expenditure. There are also accusations of fraud and bribery, and for this, he can still be prosecuted.
However, political circles are demanding that Aguna personally pays back the wasteful expenditure.
