Three men who seem to have had car trouble after stealing a vehicle were arrested by Grahamstown Highway Patrol on Saturday.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said Constable Lungile Mbadu and Sergeant Sipho Gwente were on patrol when they noticed the white Toyota corolla on West Street opposite the Makana Resort.
“The front left rim of the vehicle was resting on bricks. On checking the vehicle it was discovered that it was stolen in Queenstown. [Officers] approached the vehicle and found two males inside who mentioned that they had a breakdown and the driver went to seek help. A few minutes later the driver approached on foot and on noticing the police members he started to flee.
“Constable Mbadu gave chase and managed to successfully apprehend the suspect whilst Sergeant Gwente placed the other two under arrest with the back-up of the local SAPS members.”
Govender added: “On searching the vehicle, a loaded .38 special revolver with five rounds of live ammunition and an empty cartridge was found hidden under the gear lever. The serial number was filed off.”
The suspects face a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They are all in custody and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court soon.
