Suspect linked to nine cases of housebreaking and rape, arrested

Polokwane, South Africa – A 23-year-old man who is believed to be responsible for at last eight incidents of house robberies and rape in Polokwane, met his match on Sunday afternoon when he was tracked down by the investigation team which has been hot on his heels for the past year.

David Mamvura, a Zimbabwean national, was arrested in a flat in the central part of Polokwane after police followed up on information about his whereabouts.

The Hammer Man, as he is also known as, was first arrested more than a year ago after he allegedly broke into the house of an elderly couple in Bodenstein Street.

He threatened them with a knife and raped the 76-year-old woman and fled after taking two cell phones. The suspect appeared in court in August 2013 but was released on bail of R2 000, besides the strong opposing arguments by the investigation team.

Mamvura paid bail and never returned to court for his court appearances, resulting in the hunt for him again.

He has already been linked to nine cases of housebreaking and rape in the city. Police are investigating the possibility that he might be linked to other crimes. Mamvura appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court today.
