A special session of parliament, which now takes on the form of a circus, is scheduled for 18 April 2017.

The parliament is actually in recess until early May but now called back to hear the motion of no confidence against Zuma.

Opportunistic opposition parties demanded that a vote of no confidence be brought against Zuma after his cabinet reshuffle and the credit downgrade. Political observers, however, believe it is grasping at straws. On Friday, the DA also sought a court order to stop the inauguration of the new ministers. The process failed because it remains the duty of the president of the country to appoint or dismiss ministers at his own discretion.

Meanwhile, the speaker of parliament has already indicated that there will be no secret ballot because the rules of the parliament do not allow for this action.

After the ANC reiterated its wholehearted support to Zuma, it is a foregone conclusion that the motion of no confidence will fail. All this means is that the special session of parliament is just a futile exercise, and will cost the taxpayers a lot of money because the members of parliament will travel to Cape Town at the state’s expense.
