‘South Africa’s murder capital’ begs for more police

Cape Town, South Africa – With only 59 detectives handling around 200 cases each, the Nyanga Police Station’s Community Policing Forum (CPF) says it desperately wants another police station and more resources in the area.

The CPF highlighted some of the major reasons for the continued crime wave in the area during an oversight visit by Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee on Wednesday.

The township has the highest murder rate in the country and the local police station is severely under-resourced.

The CPF’s Martin Makhazi says inadequate resources hamper policing in their community.

“A single detective in this station is sitting with over 100 dockets, so the conviction rate is very low.”

More than 10,000 crimes were reported in the township in the past financial year…
