South Africa – Moments after former soldier Theo Stokes was shot yesterday he wrestled with the gunman and stripped him of his pistol in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.

Stokes was held at gunpoint in the early hours of yesterday morning and hijacked on Otto Volek Road.

The military veteran had dropped off a package when he was approached by two men who demanded he hand over his keys.

“I refused to give up my keys and I got into a scuffle with one of the hijackers,” Stokes said.

In the struggle, Stokes was shot in the thigh.

While wounded and bleeding, the former soldier disarmed the hijacker.

“We both fell to the ground and the firearm lay next to us. The second man then picked it up and pointed the gun at me,” said Stokes.

Stokes then gave up his keys and was left on the ground bleeding.

Stokes said despite having a tracking device installed in his car, he was not going to give up his keys.

“It is my car and I was not going to let them take it,” he said.

Stokes was taken to Hillcrest Private Hospital by ER24 who were on the scene within minutes of the incident.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said Stokes was found at the roadside bleeding heavily. “We rushed to the scene and found the male in a serious condition, he was stabilised on scene and taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment,” he said.

Banks said that Stokes was lucky to be alive.

“The bullet could have struck major blood vessels or the bones in the leg and luckily it was a superficial gunshot wound,” the paramedic added.

Stokes was kept under observation after receiving stitches and will be discharged today.

The 55-year-old, who boasts 17 years of service in the military, said his training in combat equipped him to disarm his attacker.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police were investigating a case of car hijacking.

“A case of attempted murder was also opened, however no arrest has been made at this stage. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Clermont,” he said.
