SOUTH AFRICA — In a sweeping South Africa illegal immigration crackdown, national security authorities have announced the arrest of nearly 60,000 undocumented foreign nationals so far this year. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) revealed the latest figures during a comprehensive media briefing addressing border security, public order policing, and the country’s broader security environment.
During the briefing, the NATJOINTS spokesperson outlined the state’s multidisciplinary response to ongoing law enforcement challenges, emphasizing national readiness for upcoming major events. This strategic security update arrives just over a month after the massive nationwide demonstrations held on June 30, 2026. According to the NATJOINTS spokesperson, those widespread protests served as a critical stress test for the country’s security capabilities and successfully demonstrated the efficacy of coordinated government planning.
At the core of the government’s ongoing law enforcement strategy is #OperationShanela, which officials hailed as one of the state’s most effective crime-fighting initiatives. The NATJOINTS spokesperson noted that these intelligence-driven deployments occur daily across all nine provinces. The multidisciplinary operations specifically target a wide range of security threats, including wanted suspects, illegal firearms, narcotics, organized crime syndicates, dangerous criminals, and undocumented migrants.
The crackdown has yielded significant short-term results. In July 2026 alone, authorities apprehended more than 16,208 undocumented foreign nationals through Operation Shanela and related joint task forces.
Cumulative data presented by the NATJOINTS spokesperson shows that from January 2026 to the present, a total of 59,947 illegal foreign nationals have been taken into custody for residing in the country unlawfully. Officials stressed that these aggressive, intelligence-led law enforcement operations will continue without pause or interruption.
Reaffirming the state’s mandate, the NATJOINTS spokesperson stated that law enforcement agencies remain strictly committed to upholding the Immigration Act and all relevant national legislation. The enforcement actions, authorities assured the public, are being conducted fairly, professionally, and entirely without fear or favor.
