MOSCOW — South Africa and Russia are actively moving to strengthen parliamentary ties and deepen bilateral cooperation, following high-level talks in Moscow led by Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, Chairperson of South Africa’s National Council of Provinces (NCOP). The strategic visit underscores a mutual commitment to elevating diplomatic relations and expanding collaborative efforts between the two nations.
During the official engagements, the South African parliamentary delegation participated in a solemn ceremony, laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to honor those who lost their lives defending Russia during World War II.
Speaking on the historical foundations of the bilateral relationship, Chairperson Mtshweni-Tsipane emphasized that ties between Pretoria and Moscow are deeply rooted in shared history. She noted that South Africa is keen to attract increased Russian investment and expand mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors.
The discussions prioritized the advancement of parliamentary diplomacy. Key areas of focus included fostering greater engagement between parliamentary committees, empowering young lawmakers, and activating cooperation groups established between the two legislatures.
