Front Nasionaal SA regards the sentencing of the attackers of two elderly people in the Modimolle court as shockingly inappropriate.

Mr Edwin Grobler (83) and his wife Petro (79) were attacked at the Settler’s Hotel in December of 2016 and tied up for more than 12 hours. During the attack mr Grobler was beaten over the head to such an extend that his hearing aid fell out of his ear.

Simon Tito Nkuna and Ronald Lebogang Matsebe fled the scene with stolen wrist watches, wallets, a cash register from the bar, bottles of alcohol and a DVD player. Social workers testified to the trauma of the victims during and following the attack.

Magistrate Pieter Manthatha sentenced the two attackers to 3 years imprisonment of which they have to serve only 6 months before applying for parole.

Such a sentence is completely inappropriate. Front National asked the opinion of experienced legal experts who agreed that a sentence of at least 6 years direct imprisonment for a first offense, and if previously sentenced, an even longer term of imprisonment would be regarded as suitable punishment.

A sentence such as this will undoubtedly send a message to violent criminals that they can get away with behavior such as this. Front National condemns this sentence by Magistrate Manthatha in the strongest possible terms.
