Several arrests at University of Johannesburg protest
South African police nayala.

Police nyalas were rolled out to control protesting students at the University of Johannesburg on Friday.

Several students and workers protesting against the outsourcing of work were arrested.

This happened shortly after Siyabonga Nhlabathi, chairperson of the Student Representative Council on the Soweto campus, addressed protesters, complaining about a court order against demonstrators.

“We got provoked yesterday,” he told protesters.

He said protesters were informed of an interdict granted to the university the night before stipulating that they would not be allowed closer than 700 metres to the Kingsway campus.

A News24 reporter witnessed at least 200 protesters being arrested, reportedly including Wits students.
