Security guards foil robbery near Cape Town International Airport

A shootout between security guards and robbers targeting a cigarette truck caused mayhem near Cape Town International Airport.

Police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that three suspects tried to rob the truck‚ loaded with cigarettes‚ at the BP petrol station near the airport.

“A shootout ensured between the suspects and security officers. One of the suspects were fatally wounded‚ one injured and the other fled the scene and is still at large‚” said Van Wyk.

He said police officers were still at the scene.

Deborah Francis‚ spokesperson for Airports Company South Africa‚ said the area is cordoned off but that roads to and from the airport were open.

The body of one of the robbers is lying near a silver Tazz in full view of passing motorists.

According to Amza Hmdi‚ who was nearby‚ the shooting occurred at 13:30 today (Wednesday).

“The guy in the backseat came out and tried to rob the man carrying a box of cigarettes. Security saw and shot him in the thigh‚” said Hmdi. He said the man was shot a second time.

The car had three bullet holes and shattered windows.

The other men scattered and ran in different directions.
