Security guard arrested for Alexandra mall shooting

A security guard is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of attempted murder after five people were injured when shots were fired inside an Alexandra mall on Friday.

The security officer is believed to have been overseeing the loading of ATMs at the Pan Africa Mall at about midday when he allegedly spotted a man with a gun inside the shopping centre.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the security guard then opened fire.

“Five people, including a child, were injured. They were all taken to hospital,” he said.

It is understood that the people had been hurt when a tile splintered after being hit by a bullet.

The security guard was arrested and his gun was confiscated, Maphakela said.

The gun-carrying suspect allegedly spotted by the security guard was not found.

Centre manager Benjamin Masangane told News24 he found the incident “disturbing”.

“We try to keep the shopping centre as safe as possible. What happened is completely out of the ordinary and we wish the injured shoppers a speedy recovery,” he said.

Video footage of the incident has been handed over to the police to assist in the investigation, Masangane added.
