A second general in the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) is charged with fraud and corruption.

Early in November 2017, General Major Nontobeko Mpaxa, Director of Force Preparation, was arrested for complaints of fraud and corruption. She was in line to become the first women’s head of the army.

The name of the general who has just been arrested is not yet announced pending investigation in the case.

According to parliamentary responses, there were more than 272 reported cases of theft at military bases in 2016. It can be assumed that the figure will be even higher in 2017.

Analysts point to the decline of the once-proud SADF, just like the rest of the country’s structures.

The “nest of corrupt officers and staff,” as one analyst told Die Vryburger, is a consequence of the example set by the political base, leading to no-one looking up to a member of power that steals and robs.
