SARS in IT mess

Die Vryburger

Shortly after the finance minister, Malusi Gigaba called on the poor taxpayers to pay the emperor’s share, documents at the SA Revenue Service (SARS) “disappeared.”

Two weeks into the new tax year, employees and taxpayers were informed that there was a problem with capturing data on annuity and medical deductions.

SARS has always been the main source of government funding and ran fairly smoothly, but according to experts, the problems began when Zuma appointed his personal friend and fellow mate, Tom Monyane, in 2014 as commissioner at SARS.

The resignation of almost all of the top management at SARS, as well as the problem with Kgabo Hlahla, the new IT boss suspended in Limpopo, eventually led to complaints against Ivan Pillay and the feud against Pravin Gordhan.

R70 million VAT refund to the Gupta brothers did not make things easier with SARS.
