The SA Police Service is in crisis. Police officers are tested annually for their ability to handle firearms. During the most recent tests, nearly 9,000 officers failed, meaning they had to hand in their weapons.

Denel has been blamed for the poor performance due to a shortage of ammunition, said Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela. According to Denel, a contract with SAPS has expired and their obligations have been fulfilled until the contract expired.

Even more frightening are the figures showing that nearly 4,500 firearms have been “lost” since 2013 – that’s 640 weapons a year with 9.6 million rounds “lost” which explains why police claim they don’t have enough ammunition.

Rape test sets are missing from 76% of the country’s police stations. Murder statistics show that in the period April 2017 to March 2018, there were 20,336 murders in the country. That’s almost 60 murders a day! Those who predicted that there would be a massacre if the land was not given away in 1994 may have to do their sums again.
