The South African Police Service (SAPS) has mobilized a specialized National Forensic Task Team, supported by Crime Intelligence operatives, to lead the investigation into coordinated explosions targeting Woolworths retail outlets in Gauteng and the Free State provinces.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane authorized the deployment following detonations at Woolworths stores located in Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Pretoria, and Preller Square Shopping Centre, Bloemfontein, late last week.
In an official statement, SAPS emphasized that the investigation remains in its preliminary phases, with investigators actively pursuing all potential motives. Authorities cautioned against premature characterization of the incidents.
“At this stage, it would be premature to classify the incidents as acts of terrorism,” the statement read. “SAPS remains alert and will continue to assess the situation as investigations unfold.”
The police service further indicated that any supplementary security protocols—including heightened monitoring of affected or linked premises—will be determined by evolving investigative findings and formal threat assessments.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm and to allow investigative teams the necessary operational space to carry out their duties effectively.
Forensic teams are currently analyzing evidence collected from both scenes, while detectives work to establish whether the incidents are connected. No group has claimed responsibility for the explosions, and no casualties were reported in connection with the incidents.
SAPS has requested that anyone with information relevant to the investigation come forward to assist authorities.
