According to General Solly Shoke, it is not the task of the SA Defense Force to conduct policing of criminals.

Several institutions have asked that the army be used to combat gang violence in the Western Cape.

The SANDF will, as far as possible, avoid taking action to intervene in areas where crime is high and repeated his November 2017 quote, “Should we come in, we will skop and donner.” Observers agree with him as the military and the police’s training differ materially.

The SANDF itself, however, is suffering from internal problems and even discipline within the army is a major problem.
