The Legal Practice Fidelity Fund has disclosed that over 500 cases of suspected fraud involving dishonest lawyers are still awaiting trial, with nearly R1.5 billion stolen from trust funds meant to protect clients.

The shocking revelation highlights widespread misconduct within the legal profession, where attorneys allegedly misappropriated funds held in trust for clients, including accident victims, deceased estates, and property transactions. Many victims, already vulnerable, have been left financially devastated.

Fidelity Fund CEO, Motlatsi Barnabas condemned the misconduct, stating, “This betrayal of trust undermines the integrity of the legal system. We are working with law enforcement to ensure accountability.” However, critics argue that delayed prosecutions allow culprits to evade justice.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) face mounting pressure to expedite cases as the Fund urges affected individuals to come forward.

“This is not just theft—it’s a breach of the oath to serve,” said a legal ethics expert. With billions lost and public confidence eroding, calls for stricter oversight of trust accounts grow louder.
