Robbers flee with rifle after attempted Cape Town heist

Cape Town – Armed robbers escaped with a rifle after a shoot-out with security guards during an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in Ottery on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the attempted heist occurred at 06:40 outside a supermarket in Ottery Road after a van with two occupants tried to corner the cash vehicle.

“A shoot-out ensued between security and the suspects. The suspects fled the scene with a rifle they took from the security personnel,” he confirmed.

The suspects were driving a Ford LDV van.

No injuries were sustained.

“Cases of attempted cash-in-transit [robbery] and attempted murder are being investigated. No one has been arrested at this stage,” Van Wyk said.
