President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled the second phase of Operation Vulindlela, a government initiative aimed at tackling structural economic challenges and boosting recovery. However, critics argue that the program has so far failed to deliver measurable improvements in GDP growth or job creation since its launch in 2020.

Political analyst Sandile Swana expressed skepticism, stating that despite the government’s claims, unemployment and economic growth rates have worsened. “The measurable objectives—GDP growth and job creation—have not been met,” Swana said, adding that without significant improvements in state capacity and accountability, further progress remains unlikely.

The initiative relies heavily on interdepartmental cooperation and reforms in key sectors like energy, infrastructure, and local government. Yet, Swana pointed to long-standing issues of incompetence and bureaucratic inefficiency, particularly in municipalities, where minimum competency requirements for officials have gone unenforced for years.

While the government has touted recent energy reforms and reduced load shedding, Swana questioned their sustainability, noting ongoing power disruptions. He also raised concerns about potential political resistance to increased private sector involvement in infrastructure projects.

As Operation Vulindlela moves into its next phase, doubts persist over whether it will achieve meaningful change or become another unimplemented policy blueprint. With public trust waning, the pressure is on the government to prove that this initiative can deliver real results.
