R22 000 stolen from Irish tourist’s hotel room

Irish tourist Eibhlin O’Meara planned to do some last-minute shopping in Cape Town for her wedding, only to be devastated to find R22 000 in cash had been stolen from her hotel room.

On Sunday O’Meara and Irish friend Leeann Graham were staying at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel at the Waterfront when they went for dinner. They thought they had locked a safety deposit box containing O’Meara’s money, passport and Graham’s jewellery in their room safe. But it was not until late on Monday evening when they discovered the money was missing.

O’Meara, an avid traveller, said she never kept all her money in a bank. Instead, it was easier for her to keep it in the safes of hotel rooms.

When O’Meara noticed the money was gone, she called hotel manager Rey Franco who said the alleged robbery would be investigated by an independent private investigator.

Because O’Meara leaves for Ireland on Friday, she said she was not going to open a case with the police…
