‘Quota’ player felt diminished

Die Vryburger

Former Springbok rugby player and Super Sport commentator, Ashwin Willemse, threw his toys and rugby ball of the cot on Saturday during a live broadcast on Supersport.

His complaint was that he was considered by his fellow commentators to be a “quota” player.

Willemse was more on the injured list than on the rugby field in 2004 to 2006.

He felt diminished by Naas Botha and Nick Mallett who played rugby in apartheid years.

The sports minister, Toko Xasa, obviously jumped on the bandwagon and described Botha and Mallett as racists, while probably not having any significant knowledge of rugby.

Gwede Mantashe of the ANC also supported Willemse because he stood up for so called racist behavior, saying racism should be tackled wherever it puts its head out.

SuperSport sees the events in a serious light and will investigate.
