Quick action by cops halt robbers in KZN

Newcastle – Quick action by police in KwaZulu-Natal has resulted in the arrest of four suspects who allegedly attempted to rob a business on Tuesday.

Members of the Newcastle K9 Unit and Public Order Police nabbed the suspects as they attempted to flee the crime scene at a factory on Schonland Street in Newcastle.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 40 years, allegedly robbed workers of cash and cellphones at gunpoint.

Police were alerted to the incident and the suspects were arrested a short distance from the crime scene, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Four pistols, four cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash were recovered.

“The vehicle was impounded since it was used in the commission of crime and ownership of the vehicle still needs to be confirmed,” Naicker said.

Ballistic tests will be done on the firearms to determine if they have been used in the commission of any other crime.

The suspects have been detained at the Newcastle police station and will be charged with robbery, as well as the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
