Public sector's salaries in South Africa are the highest in the world

A new report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development shows that South Africa’s civil service workers are paid the best in the world.

The comparison was made on the basis of the fact that South Africa, with its relatively small economy, compared to many other countries, pays significantly better compensation.

The report shows that the public sector’s salary increases are the main reason why the government offers such a large salary package instead of employing more people at a smaller salary.

In the last ten years, the public sector’s workforce has only increased by about 100,000 while workers’ remuneration has been much higher during the period.

In response, an economist from Pretoria says that the wrong thing to do is that the workers’ remuneration is much higher than their production capacity in the workplace, and that is why the unions are so popular, because their threats make improper salary adjustments a reality.
