The Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s recommendations on Absa’s lifeline and the Reserve Bank’s mandate that should be changed, provoked widespread criticism.
In response to the recommendations, Tito Mboweni, former Reserve Bank Governor, pointed out that the Reserve Bank had investigated and completed the Absa / Bank Corp saga in the late nineties. For the PP to come forward and make adverse decisions, is incorrect, and its recommendations regarding the Reserve Bank must be considered very thoroughly by the political parties. The independence of the Reserve Bank must not be compromised.
These recommendations of the PP comes at a time when the head of state and many of his ministers are under fire around the state capture and the suspected massive conspiracy with the infamous Gupta family.
It is now questioned whether the PP’s comments and recommendations is a lightning conductor that is being harnessed to protect its base? It is also asked how many times the PP has visited at Saxonworld.
