The dust has not yet settled on the R30 million golden handshake of the former head of Eskom, Brian Molefe, and now the Public Protector’s help is called for.

Adv. Anton Alberts referred the matter on behalf of FF+ to the PP with a special request that the persons concerned must be held personally liable if the payment was unlawful.

Adv. Alberts said there must be clarification on whether the money was a pension payout and/or whether it was a golden handshake, as Molefe resigned as chief executive officer at Eskom.

He said whatever the case is, it is clearly unlawful as Molefe would have to earn around R243 million a year at Eskom to qualify for a pension payment of R30 million. However, his salary was “only” R8 million p.a, and he rendered services at Eskom for only a year and a half.

“Obviously significant irregularities are surrounding this payout, and the PP needs to investigate political involvement up to the highest level,” said Adv Alberts.

“The PP is asked to consider, in its finding, the possibility that those involved, including politicians and officials, be held personally liable for the payment,” said Adv Alberts.
