Police union Popcru and their secretary, Steve Matsemela, got a proper bloody nose in the Pretoria High Court, and must now pay for defamation and moreover cover the costs of the case.
This follows after the previous acting police commissioner, Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane, instituted a defamation claim against Popcru, Matsemela, and three police officers.
During a media conference, they claimed that Phahlane was involved in corrupt practices at the police’s forensic laboratory in Silverton before acting as commissioner. He is accused of stealing, drugs, and rhino horn, making unlawful appointments and that he doctored crime statistics.
He commissioned an investigation into the allegations and in 2016 he was acquitted of all charges against him.
