Two police officers, a suspected business robber, and a woman were killed when a police vehicle crashed on Wednesday night, Free State police said on Thursday.
The car overturned when the officer behind the wheel lost control between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei around 22:00 on Wednesday, Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.
No other vehicles were involved. They were five people in the car – the two police officers, two suspects, and an unknown woman.
One police officer and the woman died at the scene. The other officer and two suspects were rushed to hospital in a critical condition. The second officer and one suspect died in the early hours of Thursday morning. The other suspect was in a stable condition.
Mbambo said the names of the police officers could not yet be released. A case of culpable homicide had been opened.
