Police makes breakthrough in KwaMashu mass murder

Police investigating a mass murder in KwaMashu on Wednesday made a breakthrough with the arrest of a 25-year-old man.

Four people were killed when gunmen stormed a room at the A95 block in A Section in the early hours of Wednesday morning and opened fire.

The body of another victim was found lying outside the hostel, taking the toll to five.

A 9mm pistol was found next to the body lying outside the hostel.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said their suspect was arrested at the hostel on Wednesday night.

“He was found in possession of two unlicensed 9mm pistols with ammunition. Both firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the killings,” Naicker said.

“The suspect has been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition while the investigation relating to his involvement in the killing is still under way. More arrests are expected,” he added.
