Police looking for 8 men after violent Durban shooting

KwaZulu-Natal police are on the hunt for eight men who engaged them in a “fierce” gun battle on Monday, a police officer said on Tuesday.

Speaking to News24, Warrant Officer Mark Prakasim said police had come under heavy fire early on Monday when responding to a business robbery in Zwelisha, north of Durban.

“There was an intense gunfight, with the suspects firing at police with high calibre automatic rifles. The men were exiting a spaza shop owned by foreign nationals when police came upon them.”

Prakasim said the suspects shot at, and damaged, police vehicles in the skirmish.

“It was quite intense. The gun battle was fierce. The vehicles have been damaged, but luckily none of the eight officers who responded were injured.

“The suspects however escaped into the dense shacks in the area.”

Prakasim said the police were working with the community to apprehend the suspects.

“We have no leads at the moment, but we are working closely with the community in the hope of making a breakthrough in this case.”
