Police hunting butchery and ATM robbers

The hunt is on for suspects who used the cover of darkness to break into an Umlazi butchery before cutting into an ATM inside on Tuesday night.

The robbers stole away with an undisclosed amount of money, with the heist only discovered when the business was opened on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the owner first discovered he had been robbed when he noticed the padlock on his front door had been broken.

“The padlock was damaged and entry was gained. Upon inspection, he discovered that the ATM was cut open using angle grinders and other tools and that an undisclosed amount of cash was taken by unknown suspects,” he said.

“A case of malicious damage to property and burglary at business premises was opened at Umlazi SAPS for investigation. No arrest has been made,” Zwane said.

In another incident in Umlazi on Tuesday, police and suspected robbers traded gun fire which resulted in the death of one suspect.

The man was shot and killed by officers at a business, and was found in possession of a bag of tools consistent with those used to break into ATMs.
