Police force is shrinking, population is growing

The population grew from 54 million in 2010 to 57.3 million in 2017, but this does not include the 11 million undocumented immigrants, says police minister Bheki Cele.

Undocumented immigrants, however, are nothing but illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, police numbers have decreased by almost 10 000 in the corresponding period, which means that there is one police officer for every 383 inhabitants.

There is currently a shortage of 62 000 police officers nationwide, according to the national police commissioner, Khehla Sithole. Police colleges can take 7,000 new members, so it will take almost nine years to eradicate the backlog.
