Police constable shoots 3, self at Cape Town airport

Cape Town – A 33-year-old police constable shot three people before turning the gun on himself at Cape Town International Airport on Wednesday, Western Cape police said.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the constable arrived at the airport around 18:30 and went to the food-court to speak to his partner at one of the restaurants.

“It is alleged that an argument ensued and he shot his partner and two other employees at the food outlet,” he said.

“The man then turned the gun on himself, fatally wounding him.”

An inquest docket and attempted murder dockets were opened.

“Airports Company SA Cape Town International Airport can confirm an incident which took place at approximately 18:20 at an eatery which led to a fatality,” Deidre Davids, a spokesperson, said in a statement.

“This is a tragic event and our condolences go out to the friends and family. We can now confirm that three other people were injured.”

The area was cordoned off and was declared a crime scene.

She said airport operations were not been affected because the shooting happened in a smaller section of the airport…
