A 46-year-old Free State police captain was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killings of two suspected farm attackers, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
The officer is expected to appear in the Parys Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
“The police officer was linked to the farm attack incident that happened last month, but for now, we cannot divulge any further information,” Mulaudzi said.
“We are determined to get to the bottom of this matter and we still call upon the community of Parys that if anyone has information they must not be afraid to contact us.”
Last month, four Free State farmers who were also arrested in connection with the murders were granted bail.
The group – Anton Loggerenberg, Boeta van der Westhuizen, as well as father and son Johan Cilliers senior and junior – were granted bail of R5 000.
Their matter was expected to return to court on February 12.
A farmer from the farm Biesiesbult, near Parys, alleged that while he was feeding his dogs last month, two armed men confronted him and demanded R20 000.
The farmer was pistol-whipped, but managed to run into his house and press a panic button. His attackers ran away.
A group of neighbouring farmers rallied and confronted two men – Samuel Tjexa, 35 and Seun Tangasha, in his late 20s – about 8km from Biesiesbult.
The farmers allegedly assaulted Tjexa and Tangasha before handing them over to police.
Tjexa was admitted to Parys Provincial Hospital and Tangasha to Pelonomi Hospital.
Tangasha was declared dead on arrival and Tjexa died later.
