Police arrest drive-by shooters

Swift police action has resulted in the arrest of three suspected drive-by gunmen from the notorious Glebelands Hostel in Durban, an official said on Friday.

Major Thulani Zwane said two men were travelling in a bakkie when they were attacked by the gunmen at the Mega City traffic lights in Umlazi on Thursday.

“The suspects fired a number of shots towards them whilst they were stationary at the traffic lights,” Zwane said.

A 30-year-old was seriously injured. The other target escaped unscathed.

“Following an around the clock investigation, police proceeded to the suspects’ hideout where they were arrested.”

Police arrested three suspects aged between 29 and 36 who were detained at the Umlazi police station. They will be charged with attempted murder.

It is believed they may be linked to another murder on Tuesday at the Glebe shopping centre.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police for their dedication in “resolving the violence at Glebelands”.

“We will profile the suspects to determine if they are linked to other pending cases. Despite very little co-operation from hostel dwellers, police have been working tirelessly to solve the murders that occurred at Glebelands,” she said.

“Whilst we are involved in all attempts to restore peace at the hostel there are individuals that are fuelling the violence by perpetuating attacks and counter-attacks.

“This conflict is placing a strain on police resources that are needed by communities in other parts of the province. We hope that those charged with the running of the hostel will bring order and put structures in place that will prevent unscrupulous individuals from appropriating the hostel for their own gain.”
